Meet Steve
Steve Lanier is a lifelong resident of Aztec, New Mexico, where he was born and raised on a small farm near Cedar Hill. Since 1966, Aztec has been his home—a place that taught him the value of hard work, faith, and community. Growing up, Steve developed a love for athletics and teamwork, playing football and running track at Aztec High School. Those lessons in perseverance and leadership have guided him ever since.
After graduating from Western New Mexico University, Steve began a 28-year career in education at Aztec High School. He taught history and computer science, and coached football, track, and cross-country. Through his work in the classroom and on the field, Steve mentored hundreds of students, instilling in them the same principles that shaped his own life: discipline, teamwork, and doing what’s right.
In 2020, Steve was elected to the San Juan County Commission, representing District 3. His leadership, practical approach to problem-solving, and commitment to transparency earned him the trust of his community. In 2024, voters elected him to serve as State Senator for New Mexico’s 2nd District. For Steve, public service is an extension of his lifelong dedication to helping others—a way to give back to the place that has given him so much.
Steve believes that strong families, safe neighborhoods, and good jobs are the foundation of a thriving New Mexico. His time in education and government has given him firsthand insight into what works—and what doesn’t—when it comes to building opportunity across the state.
When he’s not serving the public, Steve enjoys spending time with his family at Navajo Lake, a tradition that’s been part of his life since childhood. He’s also a big fan of NASCAR and professional football, often watching games with his children and grandchildren.
Steve’s wife, Sandra, owns a successful graphic design business that has served Aztec and surrounding areas since 2001. Like Steve, she’s deeply involved in public service—recently elected to the San Juan County Commission for District 3. Together, Steve and Sandra have built a life centered on family, faith, and community. All three of their children graduated from Aztec High School, where they were active in athletics and local service.
“New Mexico has given me everything: family, opportunity, and community. I’m running for Governor to give back to the place that raised me. Together, we can create good-paying jobs, improve our schools, and make our neighborhoods safe again. I believe in the strength of New Mexicans, and I’m ready to fight for a future that works for all of us.”
